I think the saying “time flies” is no longer just a saying because we are experiencing it. I can’t believe CAAA is turning 40 already. WOW! I remember when I moved to Edmonton in 1981, I did not see anyone who looked like me at work or in the stores that I frequented. When you did glimpse someone you cracked a big smile and waved if they were across the street from you. I met a colleague on the phone, while looking for a service at work one day, who was from Trinidad and I was elated. This woman took me to church the following Sabbath and I felt like I was “at home”. There were some familiar faces of individuals who had left Montreal for parts unknown and low and behold they were in Edmonton. It was that feeling of cultural isolation and the need to keep “home and culture” alive for their children, that led the pioneer families to form the Caribbean Association of Adventists in Alberta (CAAA). Some of these visionaries have moved on or passed away, however, their legacy lives on.
Today CAAA aims to foster, maintain and promote the cultural characteristics of Caribbean people while adhering to the principles of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The purpose of CAAA is to foster cultural enrichment, expose the children of Caribbean parentage and other Canadians to Caribbean culture and promote a high level of Spirituality among members according to the principles of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. We intend to do just that at CAAA 2019 as we celebrate 40 years.
The theme this year is “40 Years And Moving Forward” because we are marching on in Jesus Christ. I am excited about the plans that God has put in place for us. Dr. Wesley Knight has consented to be our speaker for the weekend and we look forward to the fellowship with him and his family. We will also be awarding scholarships to needy students this year. The deadline for applying is July 15, 2019. You don’t want to miss out on this amazing weekend because there is so much more to enjoy. I invite you to secure your room or cabin asap as rooms in the lodge are going fast. You can get your registration and scholarship application forms here on this site at mycaaa.ca or by contacting your local chapter (North, Central or South). I look forward to seeing you August 30 – September 2, 2019. You won’t be disappointed!
